Economy Corner History

In 1960, the Women’s Association of the First Presbyterian Church made a pledge of $5,000 to the building of the church. A rummage sale was held at 318 N. Main Street to raise money toward meeting that obligation.

Many articles—much too good to throw away—were left at the conclusion of the sale. These articles were returned to the church and became inventory for the Women’s Association’s next project—a thrift shop.

“Economy Corner” was the name chosen for the shop, and 1624 E. Central was the location. The merchandise, both new and used, is donated which means that it can be offered for sale at an affordable price.

The store is staffed by volunteers who work under the direction of a manager and assistant manager who are paid. The Women’s Association of Grace Presbyterian joined in the operation of the store in 1962, and all of the volunteer (about 100) are members of the two congregations.

Through the years Economy Corner grew, and it became apparent that more space was needed. The store building at the corner of Broadway and Central became available, and on August 1, 1973, Economy Corner opened in the new location. Many long-time residents of Wichita fondly remember one of the former occupants of the building—Champion’s Drive-In Market.

Today Economy Corner continues to thrive as those who staff the store work to provide a friendly place where our customers can shop for necessities and those special items which can’t be found at any other place.

The store celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010, and it is hoped that with God’s blessing, Economy Corner will continue its mission of service to the community and support for projects of First Presbyterian and Grace Presbyterian Churches.

Additional pieces of Roseville and Frankoma, vintage games and puzzles, old books, dishes, glassware, and musical instruments have been sold as well with 100% of the profit going to the Economy Corner due to the generous program called “Giving Works” which is offered by “eBay” for non-profit organizations.
