Dear Friends,
I want to alert you
to an exciting international conference taking place in Wichita involving our
church! Put these dates on your calendar: October 17-19, 2008. Before I tell
you more about it, however, let me ask you some questions.
Do you ever wonder
what we mean when we say “the Trinity” or “the Triune God”? How really can it
be that there is a God who is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost? And what difference
does that make in my Christian faith and in my everyday life?
A group of us who
gather monthly for lunch and theological discussion have heard these questions
from several people with whom we work and serve, and given the report on the Trinity
at the General Assembly of the PCUSA that was held three years ago, we thought
it might be good to address them in a unique and interesting way. So, the Rev.
Dr. Chris Kettler of Friends University, the Rev. Dr. Rob Erickson of Covenant
Presbyterian Church, and I began to plan a conference, jointly sponsored by our
three organizations. We touched base with our organizations and funders (in
FPC’s case, the Durfee Lecture Series group), received a “go-ahead,” and so we
“went ahead.” After some time and work, this is the result.
The conference,
entitled “The Mystery of God with Us: The Trinity and Our Christian Journey,”
will provide an opportunity to explore what the Trinity means to Christian
believers as we live out our lives and our faith in the world.
We have gathered
three outstanding theologians: Dr. Daniel Migliore (Princeton Seminary, NJ),
Dr. Cynthia Rigby (Austin Seminary, TX) and Dr. Alan Torrance (St. Mary’s
College, St.
Andrews, Scotland). All
have written and taught extensively on the Trinity and have engaging styles
that will captivate clergy, academics, and lay persons alike. The conference
provides a great opportunity for clergy and parishioners, professors and
students to attend together. It includes lectures, discussions, meals, worship
and a mission project.
We hope that persons
will sign up for the whole conference, or at least attend some part of it—at
the very least, the Sunday worship at their respective churches. Dr. Alan
Torrance will preach at FPC on October 19.
Let me or Amy
Baumgartner know if you’d like to volunteer to help with the conference, or if
you have questions about it. Click for a
tentative conference schedule. To register, contact the Covenant Presbyterian Church office.
